Arulmigu Sri Bannari Mariamman Temple is an Amman temple in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located near Sathyamangalam, Erode district.
The main deity of the temple is Goddess Bannari, revered as the goddess of rain and considered an incarnation of Goddess Shakti. She holds a significant place in Tamil and Kannada folklore, and nearly every village in the Kongu region of Tamil Nadu has a Mariamman temple. According to legend, Bannari was once a historian.
A couple from the Vannar community had gone to a river near a large hill to wash clothes, when the pregnant wife unexpectedly went into labour. Using a sari meant for washing, the husband helped deliver twin baby girls. He picked up one of the babies, but the other continued to cry. They placed the crying infant in a nearby trough and returned later to find her still weeping. While attempting to comfort her using iron tongs, they noticed wounds on the mother's right chest. The following morning, the goddess appeared in the form of a girl child inside the trough.
That night, she revealed herself in a dream and instructed the villagers to hold a festival, during which they would find her idol embedded in a neem tree. Following the goddess’s guidance, the villagers carried green flour and headed north, according to Kongu tradition, eventually discovering the idol, which remains enshrined to this day. The Kundam Festival, celebrated during the Tamil month of Panguni (March–April), draws lakhs of devotees from far and wide. The festival is so culturally significant that the Erode district observes a local holiday during the event.
അരുള്മിഗു ശ്രീ ബന്നാരി മാരിയമ്മൻ ക്ഷേത്രം തമിഴ്നാട് സംസ്ഥാനത്തിലെ ഒരു പ്രശസ്തമായ അമ്മൻ ക്ഷേത്രമാണ്. ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം ഈറോഡ് ജില്ലയിൽ സത്യമംഗലം അടുത്ത് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന ദേവതയായ ബന്നാരി അമ്മയെ മഴയുടെ ദേവതയെന്നും, ശക്തിദേവിയുടെ അവതാരമായും ആരാധിക്കുന്നു. തമിഴ്, കന്നട ജനപദ വിശ്വാസങ്ങളിൽ ബന്നാരി അമ്മക്ക് വലിയ പ്രാധാന്യമുണ്ട്. കൊങ്കു പ്രദേശത്തെ ഓരോ ഗ്രാമത്തിലും മാരിയമ്മൻ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങൾ കണ്ടുവരുന്നു.
ഒരു കാലത്ത് ബന്നാരി ഒരു ചരിത്രകാരിയായിരുന്നുവെന്നു പൗരാണികകഥ പറയുന്നു. വണ്ണാർ സമൂഹത്തിൽപ്പെട്ട ഒരു ദമ്പതികൾ വലിയ ഒരു കുന്നിനടുത്തുള്ള നദിയിലേക്ക് വസ്ത്രം കഴുകാൻ പോയിരുന്നു. അപ്പോൾ ഗർഭിണിയായ ഭാര്യക്ക് ഹിതാതീതമായി പ്രസവം തുടങ്ങി. കഴുകാനായി കൊണ്ടുവന്ന സാരിയെ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ഭർത്താവ് ഇരട്ടക്കുട്ടികളെ പ്രസവിപ്പിച്ചു. അവരിൽ ഒരാളെ അവൻ എടുത്തു; മറ്റൊരു കുഞ്ഞ് ഇടവിട്ട് കരഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നതാണ്. അവർ കരയുന്ന കുഞ്ഞിനെ സമീപത്തെ ഒരു തോട്ടിൽ വച്ച് ഗ്രാമത്തിലേക്ക് പോയി.
തിരികെ വന്നപ്പോൾ കുട്ടി ഇപ്പോഴും കരയുകയായിരുന്നു. ഇരുമ്പ് ഇലകളുടെ സഹായത്താൽ കുട്ടിയെ ആശ്വസിപ്പിക്കാൻ ശ്രമിക്കുമ്പോൾ അമ്മയുടെ വലത് വക്ഷസ്സിൽ ചെറിയ മുറിവുകൾ കണ്ടു. അടുത്ത ദിവസം രാവിലെ, ദൈവം ആ തോട്ടിനുള്ളിൽ ബാലികാരൂപത്തിൽ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു. ആ രാത്രി ദേവി ഒരു സ്വപ്നത്തിൽ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ട്, ഒരു ഉത്സവം നടത്താൻ villagers-നെ നിർദേശിക്കുകയും, ഉത്സവത്തിനിടെ ഒരു വീരമരത്തിൽ തൻറെ വിഗ്രഹം കണ്ടെത്തുമെന്ന് വ്യക്തമാക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
കൊങ്കു പ്രദേശത്തെ ആചാരപ്രകാരം ഹരിതമാവെടുത്തു ഉത്തരദിശയിലേയ്ക്ക് നടന്നുകൊണ്ടു അവർ വിഗ്രഹം കണ്ടെത്തുകയും, അത് ഇന്നും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിതമായിരിക്കുന്നു.
കുണ്ടം ഉത്സവം, തമിഴ് മാസമായ പങ്ങുണിയിൽ (മാർച്ച്-ഏപ്രിൽ) ആചരിക്കുന്നു. ഈ ഉത്സവത്തിന് ഇന്ത്യയുടെ വിവിധ ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ നിന്ന് ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിന് ഭക്തർ എത്തുന്നു. ഈ ഉത്സവം എത്രമാത്രം പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ടതാണെന്ന് വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നത് ഈറോഡ് ജില്ല ഈ ദിവസങ്ങളിൽ പ്രാദേശിക അവധി പ്രഖ്യാപിക്കുന്നതുമാണ്.
